PVC Free – Why is this important?

PVC, Polyvinyl Chloride Plastic, have you heard about it?

It’s one of the most commonly used plastics in the world for everyday items, infrastructure, plumbing, home wares, electronics, health care, toys and more! It’s inexpensive, versatile, strong, resistant to moisture and corrosion. It sounds like a perfect material to use in manufacturing. Sadly, this is not the case.

PVC is one of the most toxic materials found on our planet today. From its creation, uses and disposal, it is a quick fix, which leaves a lasting impact on our earth.

Despite it’s popularity, PVC is hard to dispose of. It can’t be incinerated due to its toxic nature when heated. So it is taken to landfill. This is where the PVC can start to decompose and leach into the soil and surroundings.

The effects of PVC and its toxic components can have a serious health affect on the atmosphere, food sources, our environment and us.

Thankfully there are effective materials, which can be used in place of PVC. Choosing to go PVC Free is a step to ensuring our home, environment and world is moving to a sustainable, safe and healthy future.

Being PVC Free is important to us at Little Wiwa. Which is why we made our mats using 100% sustainable, non toxic Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) foam and they are free from PVC, phthalates, BPA and Latex. There's no extra additives such as plasticisers (as they just don't need to!) or any anti-microbial application so it is biodegradable and odourless making it the safe and perfect choice for little ones and the environment.

But don't take our word for it - we have independently tested our play mats and they have been certified safe and compliant with Australian/ New Zealand AS/NZS ISO 8124 as well as European Toy Standards EN71.

If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact us on hello@littlewiwa.com
